"An artist’s job is to show me the world, as I don’t see it. To give perspective that will broaden my sense of reality."
Neil de Grasse Tyson
It seems that every month a new method or rule to decluttering your home is trending.
The Moving out
The Snowball
The Ski-slope
The SPACE
The Core 4
The Swedish Death Cleaning
The 80/20
The 20/20/20
The 12/12/12
And the list goes on…
I would still take the time to read the articles that come up daily (so you don’t have to! and also because I’m always curious about tidying).
It can be overwhelming to keep up and choosing what is right for you; a bit like going to a buffet. There are so many choices. Honestly, all methods are good if it is the right match for you. It simply has to be adapted to your needs and reality, even the KonMari method, the one I was trained in.
These new techniques and derivatives that you come across online can look a bit like a fast food of decluttering; an easy fix or a band-aid solution. There’s no need to reinvent the wheel. They are simply iteration of fundamental principles. The truth is there are no hacks, no tricks, nor shortcuts. You have to address every single item you own and make a decision. The goal is to treat the root cause and not the symptoms.
Real impactful changes take time and commitment. It’s about being aware and take a good look at yourself, is this who and where you want to be? What would you like to improve and do differently?
Organizing is a skill that can be learned and honed. Art is creativity that is unique to you.
The marriage between the two is:
To showcase your home under a different light,
To witness the growth of your own world,
To create a change in your lifestyle and perspective,
To impact your frame of mind and approach in life.
That is how I see the the art of organizing.
You are the artist of your life.
