My journey to tidying

"Maybe the journey isn’t so much about becoming anything. Maybe it’s about un-becoming everything that isn’t really you so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place."

I remember walking through Indigo with my mom, years ago, and seeing Marie Kondo’s “the life changing magic of tidying up” book. I picked it up with the intent of buying it, I was curious… magic and tidying in the same phrase? I guess I can understand why. Growing up, I was one in charge of the household chores, kind of like Cinderella, my sister and brother being the 2 stepsisters.

And then my mom scolded me: “Oh why would you waste your money on a that? Someone to teach you how to tidy? It’s absurd everyone knows how to clean; you can just figure out how do it yourself, besides… you can find all the information you need on Internet and it’s free!”

I reluctantly put it back down. I did do my research afterwards to learn more about the Konmari Method and with the basics down, I decided to try it out. I did the whole cleaning festival in my apartment and had so much fun turning it upside down and putting it back in order. I spent 3 whole weekends, working category by category. When everything was done, the moment of WOW came, how nice everything looked and felt! Like the satisfaction of all the times I finished cleaning the house as a kid, but tenfold exponentially better.

I remember going in to work at the Cirque the following Monday and telling all my colleagues that if I wasn’t here screen printing textiles for costumes I would go around helping people tidy. I even looked up if that was an existing job and found out about the Konmari Consultants and the certification course. However, I couldn’t afford to travel and pay for the seminar held in NY or LA at that time, and it felt like a farfetched dream. Besides, I love my team and work at the Cirque.

A few years later, with Covid-19 taking over the whole world, I unfortunately lost my job and dream career; or so I thought. I took the time to get some much-needed rest, and started my journey on self-healing, awareness and well being. I found Konmari again, bought and read her book this time! Somehow, her methods resonated enormously with the inner work that I was doing. At that moment, everything clicked and it was clear, I’m going to sign up to be a Konmari Consultant. I registered just in time for the virtual class in September 2020, qualified within 2 weeks in order to attend the course and got certified by the end of the year. The events all fell into place, like somehow all the stars aligned. And so begins my Konmari Consultant and professional organizer journey.
